RootstockCollective: 2024/2025 Roadmap
RootstockCollective is a groundbreaking DAO aiming to unite builders and users in shaping the future of Bitcoin’s Layer 2. Our goal is to create an ecosystem that recognizes and rewards meaningful contributions to Rootstock, Bitcoin’s leading smart contract platform, in a decentralized and transparent manner.
As a community-driven initiative, RootstockCollective envisions delivering a product roadmap that could provide a decentralized framework for incentivizing innovation on Bitcoin, while having RIF at the center. The proposal seeks to align the efforts of developers, backers, and stakeholders with the long-term growth of the ecosystem by exploring new mechanisms for recognition and rewards.
This proposal is presented to the community for feedback, collaboration, and eventual approval through a governance vote. If agreed upon, the community will also authorize the RootstockCollective Foundation:
- to handle any necessary deployments to fulfill the Roadmap on behalf of the DAO ensuring that the roadmap is executed efficiently and transparently
- to define the details of the Community Badges campaigns
- and to do any other action necessary to implement the Roadmap detailed below
We invite all members to contribute their insights and help co-create a sustainable, inclusive model for advancing the Rootstock network.
Roadmap by Phases:
Phase I - Shipped
Dates: 2024 Q3 (from July to September)
Phase: RootstockCollective introduces community governance on Rootstock
Description: This phase laid the groundwork for decentralized governance within the Rootstock ecosystem. A community-led treasury for grants issued the first round of grants to Bitcoin builders who submitted proposals in the governance forum.

Phase II - Work in progress
Dates: 2024 Q4 (from October to December)
Phase: Rewards sharing mechanism for builders and stakers
Description: This phase will focus on incentivizing community members to actively participate in governance processes. This objective will be achieved through the Collective Rewards (CR) Program, which introduces value capture for builders and stakers, rewarding them for their contributions and innovations on Bitcoin.

Phase III - Planned
Dates: 2025 Q1 (from Jan to Mar)
Phase: Forging the path to decentralization
Description: This phase will gradually transition towards a more decentralized governance model, giving community members full power to propose new features and functionalities.

- Collective Rewards - introducing Voting Booster
- RootstockLabs share of network fees flows into the treasury

Milestones in detail:
Phase I (July to September)
- Governance website MVP
- The governance website is the resource for on-chain governance. The MVP has the following functionality: staking, proposing, voting and community badges (the early adopter collection is released and claimed - more collections to follow)

Phase II (October to December)
- Community Badges
- The RootstockCollective Community Badges Program will foster an active community by rewarding participation, innovation, and loyalty, creating a dynamic ecosystem that rewards long-term engagement. Badges will be distributed among community members based on on-chain activity and other milestones in RootstockCollective.
- State: in development.
- Bitcoin Innovator Grants
- On-chain grants to encourage and champion innovation on Rootstock and Bitcoin.
- The first wave was completed in late September, with 9 participants joining, and 1 of them receiving a grant.

- Collective Rewards Whitepaper
- The Collective Rewards (CR) Program will be explained in a Whitepaper to be published in October explaining the methodology, mechanics, and mission.
- Collective Rewards (CR) MVP - Builders rewards through proposals
- As part of the RC V2.0 scope, Builders will be able to submit a proposal to become whitelisted RootstockCollective Builders. The RootstockCollective Foundation will carry out KYC procedures for the builders. Once the KYC process is completed and a builder is whitelisted by the community, access is granted to apply for Builders Incentives.
- Whitelisted builders: to access CR, builders need to undergo whitelisting through their proposals. Builders can be de-whitelisted by the community through another subsequent proposal at any time.
- Collective Rewards Cycles will set a timeline for when the rewards for the builders are distributed (proposed to be every 2 weeks).
- Collective Rewards - Stakers receive a share of builders’ rewards
- As part of the RC V3.0 scope, an added benefit for voters is introduced: If the proposal is successful, community members who voted will get a Voters Reward, which is determined by the Builder’s “Strategy” (the % of the reward a builder is willing to share with the voters).
- Security audit
- Security audits and reviews have been carried out by the founding team multiple times. An Independent Security Audit will be delivered by the end of 2024 and an associated report published to the community.
Phase III (January to March)
- Tally integration
- Tally.xyz is a frontend for on-chain decentralized organizations. As part of RC V4.0 RootstockCollective Governor contract submission will follow a successful Rootstock chain integration.
- Collective Rewards - Enhancements
- As part of RC V4.0, Voting boosters will be activated in the Collective Rewards based on OG Founder status
- RootstockLabs network fees to flow into the treasury
- Allocate RootstockLabs’ share of network fees to the DAO treasury, ensuring long-term sustainability and supporting future growth initiatives.
- Advancements in Governance Structure
- Introducing delegates, counsels, and working groups, for example, enhancing community participation and leadership in decision-making processes in partnership with StableLab.
