Geyser All-or-Nothing Crowdfunding with Rootstock

Description:
Geyser introduces All-or-Nothing crowdfunding powered by Rootstock smart contracts. Funds contributed to a project are locked in a smart contract until the goal is reached within a set time. If successful, funds go to the project creator. If the target is missed, contributors are refunded—trustlessly.

Description:

Currently, all Geyser contributions are “take-it-all” and sent directly peer-to-peer. This works well for immediate support but limits certain types of campaigns:

  • Projects that require a minimum amount of funding to be viable
  • Contributors unsure if a project will happen
  • Campaigns that fail to rally community momentum without urgency

All-or-Nothing (AON) solves this by introducing smart contract-based funding locks using Rootstock.

Here’s how it works:

1. Campaign Setup (Creator):

  • The creator sets a funding goal and a deadline (e.g., 21 days).
  • A smart contract is created that holds all contributions until the deadline.
  • The creator downloads a claim file to later unlock the funds if successful.

2. Contributions (Backer):

  • Contributors see the project’s goal and deadline clearly.
  • They send funds (via Lightning or on-chain), which are automatically converted into rBTC and locked in the smart contract.
  • Before contributing, they download a refund file, which allows them to reclaim their funds if the campaign fails.

3. Success Path:

  • If the goal is met before the deadline:
    • The smart contract transitions to a “claimable” state.
    • The creator can claim the funds using their claim file and choose to withdraw to Lightning or on-chain.

4. Failure Path:

  • If the goal is not met by the deadline:
    • The campaign transitions to a “failed” state.
    • Contributors can use their refund file to withdraw their funds.
    • After 30 days, any unclaimed refunds are swept to a Geyser-controlled address to close the contract.

This model:

  • Increases trust and clarity for contributors
  • Helps creators test ideas without risk of underfunding
  • Creates urgency and momentum, bringing communities together around time-bound goals

The AON model is a proven driver of larger and more successful campaigns—Kickstarter, which uses AON by default, processed $706 million in successful pledges in 2024 alone.

Product:

Geyser has reached product-market fit, has a great brand, and is the leading Bitcoin-native crowdfunding platform. We are building the financial rails for kickstarting the Bitcoin creator economy.

Notable projects launched on Geyser:

  • Bitcoin Trading Cards – Collectibles ($88k) - geyser.fund/project/bitcointradingcards
  • Bitcoinize – POS Hardware ($108k) - geyser.fund/project/bitcoinize
  • Bushido of Bitcoin – Book ($25k) - geyser.fund/project/bushidoofbitcoin
  • Hero of Bitcoin – GameBoy Game ($16k) - geyser.fund/project/heroofbitcoin
  • Bitcoin ATM – Hardware ATM ($10k) - geyser.fund/project/bitcoinlightningatm

Synergies:

This initiative showcases Rootstock as the smart contract layer for Bitcoin—bringing trusted, programmable escrow to Bitcoin crowdfunding.

The AON integration lays the foundation for future Rootstock-powered tools such as:

  • On-chain contributions via RSK
  • Split disbursements
  • Milestone-based payouts
  • Transparent project escrow

Traction:

  • 108,000+ contributors
  • 41.3 BTC raised
  • 2,240+ projects launched
  • Winner, Bitcoin Miami Pitch Competition 2023
  • $675K raised in pre-seed (Hivemind Ventures, Lightning Ventures, angels)

Roadmap:

  • Month 1: Build and test AON flow on testnet (June-July)
  • Month 3: Deploy to Rootstock mainnet, launch first campaigns with milestone disbursement (July-August)

Conclusion:

Geyser has already enabled thousands of creators to raise Bitcoin directly. With All-or-Nothing, we unlock a new, proven crowdfunding model, combining urgency, trust, and programmable logic.

This is a powerful use case not yet built on Bitcoin, with real potential to grow the ecosystem, and a perfect match for Rootstock’s smart contract capabilities.

Additional Notes:

Geyser previously submitted a grant application to Rootstock titled “Gitcoin on Bitcoin”, focused on smart contract-based matching for Geyser Grants. That application is currently on pause.

We believe the best first step for Rootstock integration is through the All-or-Nothing functionality, which addresses a highly requested user feature and has stronger immediate product-market pull. Once this foundation is in place, we can revisit deeper integration of Geyser Grants as a follow-up phase.

Hey @metamick, just to clarify, with this latest update you shared:
Should the currently active on-chain proposal (requesting $20K upfront) be voted down, and then you would submit a new one next week starting with Milestone 1?

This revised version seems to align much better with the updated grant process.

Hey @Kaf_StableLab . No need. The current one is NOT for the Grant, but just to be part of the Builders Program (for Builder Rewards). It was our oversight - apologies for this.

And that’s correct, in our next-week on-chain application we will apply for Milestone 1 funds.

Thanks for the clarification. That said, I believe the current on-chain proposal is still somewhat confusing. Right now, the active proposal text explicitly states that you’re requesting a $20,000 grant, and the discussion has revolved around grant funding. If the intention is actually to apply for builder rewards under the Collective Rewards Program, this should be submitted under the appropriate Collective Rewards category in the forum, following the instructions in this post.

I understand that the distinction between Collective Rewards and Collective Grants can sometimes be unclear, so I’d also recommend checking out these resources for more context:

While I totally support what you’re building, due to the current lack of clarity, I’m leaning toward voting against the on-chain proposal in its current form.

Hey @Kaf_StableLab,
Thanks for your reply! And I accept your feedback and take responsibility for the application being so focused on the ‘grant’.

That said, I still stand by the application of Geyser becoming a Collective Builder as we have always intend to apply to the Collective Rewards in any case. Secondly, the Rootstock tooling we are building on Geyser is going to be a core part of our platform, thus bringing us very close to the Rootstock community. Lastly, as noted in the ‘synergies’ section, we do think there is a lot more we can leverage of Rootstock to grow our platform.

Due to the confusion above and some still issues with Geyser being a US entity (and therefore unable to issue rewards), we’re requesting @Kaf_StableLab @Curia @Manu @adrian to vote against this application.

Next week the Rootstock Collective should be able to give an update on whether Geyser (and any other US entity) can operate with RIF rewards.

We will then submit a new, fresh and clean application based on all this learning and changes

Thanks for your patience.
